SNMP Monitoring F5 BigIP Pools

| | Comments (0)
At my day gig we have two sets of F5's BigIP load balancers.   In a nutshell they are appliances that direct traffic such that what appears as a single entity can really be any number of devices making it up.   For example I might have my website hosted at   myawesomesite.com  which for higher availability i can build   server1.mylan.com and server2.mylan.com  that serves traffic for this one site..   But i digress my point in posting today....

We have grown to over 250 clusters on these devices which make staying on top of monitoring quite troublesome.   I've found a very easy way to get every pool name out of the device with a simple perl script which SNMP walks the devices,  then dumps it into a dataabase, which i can export later with another script to make perfectly formatted Nagios configurations.   Seems to work like a charm so far,  i'll post some of the code here if any actually reads this silly blog.....!

Mod_Security on Solaris 10

| | Comments (0)

I've tried to compile mod_security in solaris a few times since i've been playing with my virtual machines the last few months. Until recently i have yet to do it successfully. I'm on a project that the user has required we implement some sort of application firewall or else it's not going live. Grrr..

We bought and implemented the M1000 which is Breach Security's appliance version of it but right out of the box we knew it wasn't going to work. Shiny red LED's asside, two network interfaces and no user management just wasn't going to cut it. Go live day became fast approaching and i ended up being forced to use the Apache module version. Hour and half later with tech support and it works!

If anyone is in the same boat, a major fix for us was to compile libtool from source and replace the one in the apache build dir with it (a sym link will work fine). That should do it for you.

Cheers!

Having 9TB at my fingertips makes one feel powerful. I can only imagine what the thumper feels like (the sun x4500).

I've been installing a Coraid ATA over ethernet device for a large slow long term storage solution and am mildly pleased. I'm not quite doing backflips about it yet but we'll see.

Solaris 10 in VMWare ESX

| | Comments (0)

In the last 6 months i've been deploying a new virtualized environment in VMWare for Solaris 10 x86 and Windows 2003. I've found that doing snapshots cause the Solaris machines to lock up their network adapters and loose connectivity. Not a good thing. The most recent patch release on 3/29 includes a fix for it in the patch bundle ESX-6431040. Very cool - have not had a problem since i've patched all the host's.
