We have grown to over 250 clusters on these devices which make staying on top of monitoring quite troublesome. I've found a very easy way to get every pool name out of the device with a simple perl script which SNMP walks the devices, then dumps it into a dataabase, which i can export later with another script to make perfectly formatted Nagios configurations. Seems to work like a charm so far, i'll post some of the code here if any actually reads this silly blog.....!
I've finally gotten around to creating a webpage to document all our adventures too. You can find that here (gatordawg.com).
In other news & more gadgety news - all this hiking we're doing has re-ignited the flame i used to have in mapping software and GPS in general. I've taken my running gps (the garmin forerunner 301) on both 14er hikes we've done and i've plotted our tracks on the maps. pretty cool stuff, check this page out for more info. I might have to invest in standard GPS one of these holidays if i keep it up. Garmin looks like they have some sweet things up their sleeves.
The backpack i was all excited about a while back, the Naneu Pro Alpha, has started to let me down. A few weeks ago the belt clip exploded in a car door smash (ok probably not their fault, though it could have been tougher or metal) and on the first 14er we did last week one of the seems on the top is coming undone. Geez... They'll probably replace it, but still... Might need to go back to the drawing board for a good hiking/photo bag.
i've never been big about posting personal stuffs on a blog or on a website (before the blogs were big), but after coming across someone's page that we ran into at the dog park, i'm really starting to think about it. They tracked all the cool stuff they did like climbinb 14ers and other adventures. I think that'd be a blast to do.. Wonder if it would be best to use a blog software for it though.... oh the ideas..
What i DO want though is a good wysiwyg OSX application for websites that the Girl can use to update it as we all SHE is the creative one in the family (sorry maddie)
I'm of course always fascinated by gadgets. As of late with the move to Colorado and all the exciting and sometimes frightening things we do it totally strokes my always-be-prepared-for-it-all gene to read up on emergency gadgets. A satellite phone would be sweet - and somewhat attainable for my job if it ever comes to that. Those emergency beacons are pretty neat too.
But i just read about something that seems to be a love child of an emergency beacon, cell phone and GPS. http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&ndmConfigId=1000010&newsId=20070807005332&newsLang=en">The SPOT is a nifty little gadget as well as actually not that expensive. Cheaper than a mid-grade GPS even. Doesn't seem to have a screen, but that would be a good thing for battery life i think.
Looks like it has a couple of modes - (1) emergency 911, (2) ask for help for friends/family, (3) check in and (4) track progress (on google maps even!).
I have got to get my grubby geeky paws on one of these.
What now..... Riders should strike or something. Bring some kids up from the development teams to finish the race.
To quote David Millar in the AP, "Jesus Christ, I'm speechless" said David Millar of the United Kingdom, who rides for Saunier Duval-Prodir. "It makes me sad. I have the impression the riders will never understand."
Astana Team announced today that Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan failed a blood test following his victory in Saturday's time trial.
You have got to be fucking kidding me. This is the worst possible time for this to happen for the sport. So frustrating.
It seems that young riders are doing much better than normal this year in the Tour. I have two thoughts on this. (1) Maybe there is just more of them now that so many people have been banned by the doping scandals. But it seems that they are even kicking the older guys in the behind that are still in it and SHOULD be more in it. So my other thought is (2) maybe just maybe these younger riders are totally clean and now have an advantage in that they have not been relying on doping as they've been building themselves up.
I heard it joked the other day, with an underlying seriousness, that the slower pace of the peloton had something to do with the riders missing their dope. Sure we laugh about that, but in some sense there is a little bit of truth there.....
Coming from a solaris background banging away at my first linux virtual machine has been entertaining. I didn't even realize the machine was built with logical volumes so going in and trying to expand file systems via the normal method i usually do with a gparted live cd just craps out on me.
Here's how to expand LVM2 partitions (i think, so far.....)
* boot to rescue disk from OS vendor
* when prompted don't mount file system
fdisk
create partition
change type to 8e (for LVM)
lvm pvcreate /dev/sda3
lvm vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sda3
lvm lvextend -L32.5G /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
I can admit it. I'm not a regular blogger, not the most entertaining blogger, nor is my heart really into blogging. I do however, have my heart in photography (most of the time) and my mutt (all the time).
And that is how Dog365 was born. The 365 Project is one of those internet memes that people have latched onto over the past year or so, but it's always seemed kind of vane to me. Why would anyone want to look at ME everyday. (ha, that's probably why i don't like blogging about normal stuff for the same reason) But i KNOW everyone wants to look at my DOG every day (or so she thinks).
So far i've posted about 21 days worth i think. It's evolved from just simple camera phone pictures early on to high quality ones these days. Just simple one liners about what's going on before to more detailed summary of current events (as long as something IS going on, lazy bones. I've even picked up a photoblogging buddy Lola the super cute pitmix that Hillary has in SF, doing the same daily thing.
Maybe i should start blogging each picture here with a longer description? That might turn into too long of a daily routine... In any case... Stay tuned to the flickr feed! And join the Dog365 group if you start adding your own!
