oh the possibilities

| | Comments (0)

Its time to start thinking about next summer's work situation as the OCI (On-Campus Interviews for the non-legal types) process begins next week. Some of the firms/organizations/etc. that will be interviewing at my school sound ok but nothing has really tripped my fancy, largely because of the location of a lot of the offices. I'm going to go through the OCI process on campus, but I'm also doing a ton of research to find other firms/organizations/etc. in other parts of the country that sound interesting. While I would love to stay in the small town I'm in now, I know the chances of that actually happening are slim to none, and the nearest big city is nice but not the kind of place I really want to settle down long term, so I'm branching out.

Part of me is thrilled. Part of me is scared. Largely, I feel overwhelmed.

There are just so many decisions .... what kind of office do I want to work in? Where do I want to live? Is it the kind of place the boyfriend will be able to find a job?? And then, of course, all this rests upon whether or not they actually hire me.

I'll be VERY happy when its all figgered out!

blog decisions

So I was sitting in property daydreaming the other day when I noticed that the girl sitting next to me was perusing a popular law school blog. There were several links on the blog to other law school blogs which of course linked to other law school blogs. I sat there wondering how it would feel if I looked up in class and noticed the person on the laptop in front of me surfing my blog. I don't like that idea.

I've been toying with the idea of maybe, just maybe, removing the "law student" tag from my blog. When I started this blog over a year ago now, I did it with the idea that it would be about my law school experience. But the truth is, its more about my life, with law school as the occaisional backdrop. How different would this blog be if I was just a random grad student? If my subject of study were non-specified? Would it allow me to be more honest? More open? More candid? Or would it take something away?

Its something to ponder and no big changes will be made any time soon.

It seems people around here are hot on my trail!

I noticed I got a visitor from a link from a Blackboard discussion board entry today... and I'm oh so curious as to what the course was, why I've been linked, if I know the people, if its from the law school... I don't really mind... I'm just wondering who it is... part of having a blog is having strangers read it, I realize that... having said that, its kind of creepy if they're not really strangers and you don't know they're reading it!!

So if one of you Blackboard linkers could tell me whats up, that'd be cool.

Blog updates

For some unknown reason, my total number of blog hits yesterday was twice my highest day ever. Cool. Several small factors came together to give me big numbers... including a response to a question I asked over at Stay of Execution giving me a front and center link, and being newly listed on the list of law students on Notes from the (Legal) Underground. Even on days that are not quite so heavy in visitors, I'm seeing a steady increase every day... which is pretty exciting.

To my new visitors, welcome! I hope that you've found something somewhat insightful and interesting (altho, with finals going on right now, I highly doubt there is really anything much worth reading about from my fried brain at the moment!).

Thanks to everyone who has been responding to my invitation for introductions! Its been very cool learning about who is coming here and how they got here and why they stay. Yeah, you've kind of been caught peeking in someone's bedroom window, but when that person walks around naked with the blinds open inviting you to look in, then, well, there's nothing wrong with that!

And on THAT note, I must read a little more Torts and then hit the sack. The coffee pot will begin self-grinding at 5 a.m. Good night all!

Intro

Since I seem to be collecting more and more readers all the time (thank you thank you thank you!) I thought maybe I should put up a little intro, because I know its bloody irritating when you try to read a blog and have no idea what the hell the person is talking about or where they are coming from.

So here is everything you need to get started: I'm a third year law student at a University in the midwest. After a few Ironman finishes (and a few Ironman non-finishes) I am getting back to my roots and heading off-road. I'm brushing up on the mountain bike skills in the hopes of trying out Xterra and mountain bike racing next year. I am engaged to my best friend in the whole world, and couldn't be happier. I love the outdoors, coffee, and my puppydog.

This blog isn't anonymous in that anyone who knows me in real life would have no problem figuring out who I am. It is anonymous in the fact that searching Google for my name won't make this blog show up. I don't clearly state the name of the law school I attend, but anyone with any knowledge of midwest geography or Google know-how ought to be able to figure it out if they're that curious. Suffice to say, I live in a wonderful town that I love dearly and attend a University that I'm closely tied to.

I don't have the huge readership volume that other blogs have, but, as I said earlier, I'm getting more and more readers all the time. I check my stats daily and love trying to figure out who is visiting. Some of you are pretty obvious (I can't imagine that I have that many readers in Alaska) but some of you have me completely miffed as to who you are and how you found me. Now that I've introduced myself to you, feel free to introduce yourself to me (or give me a heads up as to who you are if I already know you...). No pressure of course, but I love getting comments and am genuinely curious as to who is visiting my little blog.

I wanted to quickly plug a blog I came across today. Its written by a 16 year old girl in Mosul, Iraq and in it she talks about all sorts of things, but mainly, what life is like over there these days. Its eye-opening and heart-wrenching and a good reminder that its not just the soldiers that we see on tv every day who are living this life...

Amazing how the wonders of the internet can allow for a 16-year old girl living in a war-torn nation's voice to be heard.

Check it out here.

A New Blog

My dear friend Smacca had recently journeyed from the north to the further north to teach at a school in a little tiny village in Alaska. She is one of the most brilliant, funny, and kind-hearted people I know and her blog promises to encompass all of the above.

(Please note that I just fixed a typo in the first line ... for those of you who thought my dear friend Smacca was actually my dead friend Smacca, I apologize. Altho, a blog from the grave would be kinda cool...)

Spent the evening drinking a glass (or two) of cabernet and working on the blog. Submitted it to a whole bunch of new search engines (Who needs Google anyway?) and messed with links. Added a few links, including a couple blogs I've started reading. Quickly lost interrest in link adding (hence the very few links listed). More to come.

I never EVER thought I'd get so into this geeky computer stuff... I even did some of my own HTML!! I blame the boyfriend for this.

I'm a Google reject.

So what exactly does one have to do to have their site submitted to and actually listed on Google?! I submitted my blawg to Google, Yahoo, etc a month or so ago and within days I was getting hits from people looking for pictures of the rhodesian ridgeback with the baby fawn (oddly, this is the search that most frequently brings people here). I resubmitted my blawg last week sometime, and I'm still not google-able. Why does Google hate me so? Is it because I still use AOL? Is it because it knows that I never install the updates on my computer? That I hate running virus scan? What is it Google! Please tell me, because I'd like to be listed.

Tho my (very small) readership is steadily rising, most of my audience still journeys over from the moo page or TNO, and some of them actually return on a regular basis to see what the hell I'm going to ramble about now.

Thank you, loyal readers.
